Possible Hardware Failure, Need Clarification.

Post  Learn your ABC's with S7 on Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:54 pm

If needed I will provide specific specs of my computer. It's DELL. I know. Just keep reading. This can apply to any computer according to research I've done in the past.

Currently, my desktop has been used for 3 years. Without any warning or symptoms beforehand, it began freezing instantaneously for indefinite periods of time, and usually requires a manual reboot via power button. When this freezing occurs the monitor freezes, there is no response to any input (CTRL+ALT+DELETE), and if there was sound playing at that instant, it would stutter, almost like a harsh ringing for the entire time it froze. I've never seen it unfreeze alone.

One notable problem I've had earlier which could be related is my computer constantly trying to find a disk when I start it up, saying 'Diskette Drive Error' because it couldn't find a disk. I press F2 and went to options, nothing seems to be changed or altered or corrupted.

Once again, this happens at seemingly random intervals. No signs of imminent freezing. Disregard overheating as the issue, as I kept track on the temperature of the PC and it never became above average. I also clean it regularly, which also helps in reducing overall temperature.

This is why I am convinced it could be hardware failure. I am not inclined to send it in for professional biopsy, as it's apparently costly.

One factor that MAY help in reducing these episodes of freezing are using minimal programs. If I have a game and Youtube running simultaneously, evidently there's increased risk. If I use 1-2 programs at any given time, it'll work.

I'm going to recieve the last of my parts that I ordered to upgrade my Alienware in 2 weeks anyway. I have an Aurora Desktop with monitor, keyboard and mouse with some custom parts I'm going to install, and so does my friend (it's like a collaborative effort). I just wanted to know if there was anything I could do for this old one.

(+) It could also be a problematic graphics card, or my wireless card.

I have. It's not muck inside my PC, and there aren't any corrupt files, at least detected by security.

Maybe there's some sort of conflict with a file you downloaded and other things you run?

Heavy: Maybe...maybe...

Probably not. This happens a lot more when I have Youtube on, so I think it's more frequent when directly accessing the HDD.

I tend to get a new computer every couple years or so, maybe it's just time for you to start fresh? Of course, you can use an external hard drive to save all your old files, but a new main one could speed up your experience.

I have a custom Alienware module I made with help from a friend. The newer custom components I've ordered are due in just under two weeks. I'd like to do what I can for this PC I have at the moment in the meantime.

Alienware huh? Those a pretty sweet. I would recommend a defrag, perhaps even wiping your downloads folder (most PCs come with one). Additionally, try to clear as many cookies as possible, as they tend to be able to slow down computers a fuckton.

This thing has only frozen before it got a BSOD of TF2, never crashed before that, and never frozen. Only a shitload of crashes from TF2 and 1 freezing.
